Named for a kabuki theater that was never built. The 1948 plan collapsed; the name didn't. The neon district that grew in its place is a monument to a play that never opened.
After the war flattened this district, local leader Suzuki Kihei drew up a reconstruction plan: an entertainment center anchored by a grand kabuki theater. In 1948 the town was named for it — Kabuki Town. The theater was never built. The name stayed, and the entertainment district grew up without it.
Modern proof
In 2024 — 76 years after the naming — kabuki was finally performed in Kabukichō, at the new THEATER MILANO-Za. The name caught up with reality at last.
